Chimurenga music legend, Thomas Mapfumo has bemoaned piracy and called for the government to intervene by ratifying laws to stop the scourge.
This came out at a courtesy call by Mapfumo to the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Cde Kazembe Kazembe.
Following the pirating of more than 12 albums of the music legend, Mapfumo said it is imperative that people start recognising artists’ work, adding that the government should help stop piracy in the country.
Minister Kazembe said his ministry is working on the implementation of various pieces of legislation in order to address the issue of piracy in the country.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe today joined the rest of the world in commemorating the World Book and Copyright Day which is celebrated on the 23rd of April.
Director of Arts in the Ministry of Sport, Arts and Recreation, Dr Biggie Samwanda said it takes a collective action by citizens and the government, together with the artists to address copyright issues.
Minister Kazembe then commended plans by Mapfumo to set up a foundation under his name to help upcoming artists in the country.
