Former World Boxing Council (WBC) silver welterweight champion Charles Manyuchi has launched a multi-discipline sports academy with an initial 9 athletes drawn from across the country to be based in his home town of Chivhu.
The academy to be based in his hometown of Chivhu will focus on grassroots development and nurturing talented athletes into world class athletes and champions.
Academy founder and director Manyuchi said despite being based in Zambia it was his idea to give back to community by developing a cross section of athletes identified during the Champion of Champions and National Youth Games.
Guest of honour, Zimbabwe Boxing Federation (ZBF) president Jim Mphalela applauded efforts by Manyuchi adding that he looks forward to seeing more world champions.
Renowned Chivhu businesswoman Prosper Chibaya who has partnered Manyuchi as director and sponsor said about $100 000 was required to fully establish the academy.
Initially 8 athletes signed two year contracts while one was absent.
The multi- discipline academy will offer other sports such as football, tennis, squash, netball, volleyball and netball besides boxing.
The eight athletes include Evans Usaihevhu (Harere 21 years), Future Mazeya (Hwange 25 years, Matabeleland North), Aliya Issa Phiri (Harare 17 years), Asani Milanzi (Harare), Melissa Matanhire (Chivhu Mashonaland East), Caroline Ncube (Bulawayo 23 years), Brendan Dennis (Mashava, Masvingo 23 years), Shepherd Sithole (Midlands – in absentia) and Tinashe Majuru (Masvingo).
