Pushed by the need to value add the abundant grass countrywide in order to minimise veld fire incidences, Grasslands Research Institute in Marondera has invented the solution, a manual hay bailer for farmers.
According to the research centre, the manual hay bailer is affordable to local farmers and is made using locally available resources.
Grasslands Research Institute Chief Livestock Research Officer, Mr Accadius Tigere said the manual hay bailer presents the best option in reducing veld fires as farmers have the opportunity to use abundant grass which is the main cause of veld fires.
“The manual hay bailer also helps in adding value to the grass by farmers for their stock feed,” said Mr Tigere.
The machine costs $50 against the tractor operated hay bailer which demands finances in the range of $50000.
Many have not realised the untapped revenue lying in value adding grass making the portable gadget, a must own for many.
