Farmers in Manicaland Province have been hailed for their contribution to the country’s food security efforts through the command agriculture programme.

The Manicaland Minister of State for Provincial Affairs, Cde Monica Mutsvangwa noted that the command agriculture programme has transformed the lives of many farmers in the province.

“The command agriculture programme has been a game changer for many farmers in the province. The programme has been an added advantage to farmers in the province who apart from the good soils also enjoy favourable climatic conditions,” she said.

Nyanga South legislator, Cde Supa Mandiwanzira said he is heartened that global agriculture powerhouses are coming into the country saying this will be a boost in guaranteeing food security.

“We need to now move towards using land productively. While some people may celebrate that they are using all the land that they have for agriculture, the question that needs to be asked is that is the land being used productively,” he said.

The success of the command agriculture programme is best seen in how the country managed to produce over two million metric tonnes of maize in the last season.
