Malawi’s former president, Joyce Banda is expected back home this week from an almost 4-year self-imposed exile.
Banda fled Malawi in 2014 after a financial scandal and has lived in the US, South Africa and the UK.
Police last year issued a warrant of arrest warrant for her in connection with what has now benn known as the ‘cashgate’ scandal in which senior government officials siphoned off millions of dollars from state coffers.
Banda has however denied allegations of abuse of office and money laundering.
Now that Banda is heading back home, it remains to be seen if she would be detained on arrival and a police spokesperson declined to comment.
Banda’s spokesperson, Nowa Chimpeni said the ex-President plans to rebuild her People’s Party ahead of elections in 2019.
