A call has been made to fully capacitate the fire fighting division through training of its personnel to equip them for their otherwise risky task.

The call came out during a certification ceremony for 126 fire fighters from the City of Harare who underwent training in fire fighting procedures, incident command and risk assessment.

The City of Harare also received firefighting equipment worth thousands of dollars.

In October last year, the media carried a story on 3 City of Harare fire fighters who were seriously burnt trying to rescue trapped workers in Harare’s Granite Side industrial area.

In a number of fire incidences the Fire Services Division has been accused of coming to the scene ill-equipped to put out the fires or rescue the victims.

However, in a development, the City of Harare has partnered a humanitarian organisation, Operation Florian to capacitate the Fire Services Division through training of its members.

Operation Florian head of delegation, Mr Shepherd Ndlovu said the partnership which is being implemented in phases will ensure that the country’s fire fighting emergency services improve.

The event saw 126 fire fighters receiving certificates after going through training on a number of programmes which include fire fighting procedures, incident command and risk assessment among others.

The City of Harare also received firefighting equipment worth thousands of dollars.
