The Department of Research and Service in the Ministry of Agriculture mechanization and irrigation development has called on farmers to be on the look out for the Large Grain Borer which has so far been reported in Mashonaland West and Mashonaland Central Provinces where it has destroyed over 80 % of grain in the areas.
According to the Department of research and Service inÂ Agriculture Ministry, the Large grain borer, was first detected in Mashonaland central Province and has now spread to Mashonaland West where it destroyed grain stored at grain reserves in Zvimba district.
Acting director in the Department Dr. Cames Mnguni said the pest which poses a big threat to national food security, calls for urgent attention.
He urged traditional leaders to take a leading role in mobilising their communities to report any cases of the grain borer to their nearest Agritex offices.
According to Department the large grain borer is so destructive and could be a new threat to Zimbabweâ€™s maize industry and can completely eat all stored maize.
The reported borer is resistant to usual pesticides used to control pests of its kind.
