The solo exhibition that was held in Blantyre, attracted 15 local firms that were interested in broadening export earnings in line with strong bilateral trade ties between Zimbabwe and Malawi.

ZimTrade Export Development Manager, Mr. Stanley Tupiri confirmed that the exhibition which ended last month, created business opportunities for local firms in terms of export orders and joint ventures.

“ Indeed it was a success as some local companies did manage to clinch some deals,” he said.

Latest statistics from ZimTrade shows that Zimbabwe exported goods worth US$40 million  to Malawi in 2006. The figure increased to US$47million in 2007 before the earnings declined in 2008 to US$38 million.

However, last year export earnings rebounded toUS$43 million.

Both countries are in discussions on modalities to create a favorable playing field in terms of imports and exports through revising the current balance of payment position which is in favor of Zimbabwe.
