The Marondera-Wedza Senator, who is also the Minister of State for National Security, Dr Sydney Sekeramayi has urged local authorities to ensure that urban development does not affect the environment.
In an interview after a tour of the Cherutombo sand abstraction site in Marondera, Dr Sekeramayi said local authorities should ensure that they have registered sites where people can get sand without causing environmental degradation.
The land reclamation project was undertaken by the Marondera municipality, the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) and the BAT Northern Tobacco.
The site is situated south of Marondera town and covers 4 hectares.
Dr Sekeramayi also planted a Mumve tree at the site while other stakeholders also planted a variety of indigenous trees.
