Legislators have castigated utterances by Finance Minister Tendai Biti during the Mid-Term Fiscal Policy Review where he said government has no capacity to support land reform, saying this is tantamount to reversing the gains of the liberation struggle and the land reform programme.
Zanu PF legislators have condemned Finance Minister, Mr. Tendai Biti’s suggestions that 99-year leases should be bankable and tradable as well as his sentiments that government should not be responsible for funding agriculture, saying land was the fundamental reason why sons and daughters of this country sacrificed their lives.
In an interview with ZBC News, Vice President Joice Mujuru who is also the member of the House of Assembly for Mount Darwin North Constituency, argued that governments the world over are known for subsidising the agricultural sector since it is government duty to feed the nation.
Cde Simbaneuta Mudarikwa who is the member of the House Assembly for Uzumba Constituency said the statements by Mr. Biti shows his aspirations of reversing the gains of the land reform programme, adding that the moment 99 year leases are made tradable, former white commercial farmers could buy back the land, thus reversing the gains of the agrarian reform programme.Â
Senator for Chimanimani- Mutare Constituency, Cde Monica Mutsvangwa noted that a legal instrument that compels financial institutions to provide funding to farmers in order to stimulate growth in agriculture must be put in place.
Minister Biti had argued that the 99-year leases government had given to new farmers were not bankable and could not be used as surety to secure loans from banks.
