The sixth edition of the Lakers Foundation basketball tournament that recorded an increased participation saw exciting action being showcased by the teams.
Saturday saw the pinnacle of the action taking place at Khanyisile Sports Complex with Harare side JBC and Bulawayo-based Southern Mavericks being crowned the champions in the men and women’s categories respectively.
While noting that the tournament’s future looks bright, Lakers Foundation director Sikhumbuzo Ndlovu was left a satisfied man with the quality exhibited.
JBC managed to upstage city neighbours Raiders 57-47 in a tightly contested men’s final while in the women’s final it was a ‘Battle of Bulawayo’ that saw Southern Mavericks getting the better of Lakers 46–35 in another exciting contest.
The winning coaches were full of praise for their sides and noted the improvement in the quality exhibited by participating teams.
In other categories, Churchill were crowned Under 16 champions in the boys section after beating Goromonzi whose girls side were the winners in the girls segment when they got the better of Dominican Convent.
In the Under 13s, Matabeleland South-based Usher beat defending champions Mgoqo in the final while Sigombe got gold when they upstaged Mawaba in the boys final.
Sibongile Mnkandla and Kudakwashe Roje were voted the most valuable players in the women and men’s competitions respectively.
