The Lakers Foundation Basketball tournament that features three categories got underway at Eveline High School and Khanyisile Sports Complex in Bulawayo with an increased attendance by participants.
26 primary and 24 secondary schools join the 28 elite clubs in this year’s edition that marks the sixth anniversary in the seniors category and second in the juniors.
Primary schools defending champions, Mgoqo in the girls’ category and Mtshane in the boys’ section will be hoping to retain their crowns while it is yet to be seen if Unza Pacers and Unza Honies, both from Zambia, will keep the senior men’s and women’s crowns won last year respectively.
In an interview on the sidelines of the primary schools action at Eveline High School, Lakers Foundation director, Sikhumbuzo Ndlovu revealed that the tournament was being used as a platform to expose local talent to competitive levels of the sport.
The event that is graced by a number of top experienced clubs in JBC, Mercenaries, Steelers, Hustlers, City Hornets, Mavericks and the hosts Lakers will run until Saturday.
Finals for the seniors will be conducted at Khanyisile Sports Complex.
