The National Association of Primary School Heads (NAPH) Harare Province athletics competition hogged the limelight for the wrong reasons with a lack of technique proving dangerous for budding athletes.
What was meant to be an exciting outing for young primary school athletes transformed into a huge risk for some athletes that completely missed the landing cushion in the high jump event.
Lack of coaching was evident on the part of several athletes but NAPH Harare Metropolitan Province chairman Stanley Makwembere was adamant standards are high.
Junior athletes took part in high jump, long jump and discuss with the track events slated for this Friday (tomorrow).
The NAPH Harare Province competition is used to select athletes that will compete at the national competition.
After expressing concern about a lack of technique by many of the athletes it came to the attention of ZBC News that most schools do not have qualified coaches with the requisite knowledge of imparting the basics to young athletes, with the absence of equipment a major hindering factor.
