A fire broke out at Kariba District Hospital early this morning, destroying key functional units of the health care facility.

The fire destroyed the pharmacy apartment and all its drug stocks, the x-ray unit, casualty department and the human resources records office.

Kariba District Medical Officer, Dr Godwin Muza said the drugs destroyed range from ARVs to antibiotics and those for other chronic illnesses.

He also said x-ray screening and theatre services will in the meantime be accessed in Karoi, some 160 kilometres away.

“We lost all the drugs that were in store in the pharmacy. We also had our x-ray unit office furniture, records keeping equipment and documents as well as equipment in the casualty department destroyed,” said Dr Muza.

Mashonaland West Provincial Medical Director, Dr Wenceslas Nyamayaro said reconstruction of the destroyed infrastructure is required as a matter of urgency, adding that the disruption of x-ray screening and theatre services will create demand for more ambulances to ferry critically ill patients to Karoi.

Dr Nyamayaro further stressed that the Provincial Medical Directorate is compelled to undertake an intensive exercise to mobilise resources and replace the destroyed drugs.

“We will use a temporary structure for a pharmacy and refer patients with chronic diseases to Nyamhunga clinic. The destroyed infrastructure requires reconstruction as you can see we no longer have the casualty department,” he said.

The fire broke out at around 4.am this Thursday and the cause is not yet known.
