MDC Alliance vice chairperson Tendai Biti has been convicted of violating the Electoral Act.

Harare Regional Magistrate Gloria Takundwa sentenced Biti to 6 months imprisonment and a fine of $200. The law permits for both imprisonment and a fine.

She however, suspended the 6 months on condition that Biti will not commit a similar offence in the next 5 years.

Biti violated the Electoral Act after announcing the MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa as the winner of the 2018 presidential election despite President Emmerson Mnangagwa having won the polls.

Before the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) finalised collating of the presidential elections, Biti called for a media conference and pronounced Chamisa as the winner in violation of Section 66 A which criminalises the announcement of electoral results by individuals or organisations other than ZEC.
