A Harare magistrate is today expected to sentence two convicted jail escapees, Albert Mugove Matapo and Lucky Mhungu.
The two together with another duo of Donald Gwekwerere and Asani Chikwanda attempted to escape from Chikurubi Maximum Prison by cutting some burglar bars.
The four were assisted by Gwekwerere who was a prison officer at Chikurubi Maximum Prison and provided the materials.
However, Gwekwerere and Chikwanda pleaded guilty to the charges and were sentenced to five effective years.
During aggravation, the State represented by Mr. Michael Reza urged the court to pass the maximum sentence of seven years to Matapo and Mhungu for wasting the court’s time by denying the charges.
Mr Reza also applied for Mhungu to serve his sentence consecutively.
Mhungu is currently serving a 12-year jail term for armed robbery, a development which may live Mhungu seem unpunished if his sentence is to run concurrently.
