unity 2.jpgWith a day left before the nation commemorates Unity Day, the date 22 December has become a landmark achievement in memory of the occasion when two liberation parties, PF Zapu and Zanu PF signed the historic Unity Accord that ensured peace and political development in Zimbabwe.

It was not only a journey of sacrifice for the two movements’ leaders, the late Father Zimbabwe, Dr Joshua Nkomo and President Robert Mugabe, but also for the entire Zimbabwean populace.

By undertaking to work together for the common good of the nation, the two parties gave to Zimbabwe a long standing legacy of peace and tranquillity, thus paving way for development.

Veteran ZIPRA freedom fighter and now Politburo Member, Retired Colonel Tshinga Dube says a lasting peace resolution gave to Zimbabwe an opportunity to channel all its resources towards development and the wellbeing of its citizens.

While Father Zimbabwe might be gone, his words describing the Accord as: “not just the signing of documents, [but] what follows,” have stood the test of time.

The celebrations and decisions of that day have culminated in a Zimbabwe whose prosperity was advanced by that visionary stance and to many, unity will not just be celebrated on a specific day, but every day with its legacy permanently imprinted on Zimbabwean history.
