Sixty-nine players drawn from various parts of the world are taking part in the ITF Bulawayo juniors’ tennis tournament at the Bulawayo Country Club.
The list made up of 40 boys and 29 girls has participants from the USA, Greece, Australia, India, South Africa, Botswana and the hosts Zimbabwe.
The tournament that started on Monday and is in Bulawayo for the very first time runs till Saturday.
It is used to gain points for international rankings among the 18 and under category.
According to the tournament director Cliff Nhokwara hosting the event was an advantage to local players as they cut down on travel and upkeep costs associated with going outside the country for such tournaments.
“Bulawayo is a Group 5 category so it lays the background for gaining points for the athletes. It is a great advantage to the local tennis fraternity that they get to attempt to gain the relevant points on familiar conditions at home,” said Nhokwara.
Zimbabwean players have impressed in this tournament over the years with special mention being Mehluli Sibanda who managed to reach three finals during the last edition.
