Farmers at Tshongogwe Irrigation Scheme in Jotsholo have joined the nation in extending birthday messages to President Robert Mugabe who turned 93 on Tuesday.
The farmers have commended him for consistently supporting the scheme with tractors and other inputs to boost production levels.
The Farmers were speaking during a visit to the irrigation scheme by a delegation from the Agriculture Rural Development Authority (ARDA) to assess the level of maize production this agricultural season.
ARDA board chairman Mr Basil Nyabadza said through President Mugabe`s 10 Point Plan, Tshongogwe Irrigation Scheme has become an example of a project that is not only self-sustaining but has the capacity to improve food security in the country.
“Here we are. We are assembled the children of Zimbabwe, the children of Zimbabwe in Matabeleland North, to mark that day in the field of maize which we are growing to fight hunger, eradicate hunger from our own midst. So sir, we are saying we thank the lord for looking after you. We wish you many more,” said Nyabadza.
The 24.4 hectare irrigation scheme was renovated in 1990 to enable it to be more productive and each local farmer grows maize and vegetables on 0.4 hectares they were allocated.
