Government through ZINARA will this year disburse over US$5 million to 10 local authorities in Mashonaland Central Province.

Road authorities should pursue public and private sector partnerships to enhance road infrastructure development as the amount currently being collected annually by ZINARA is not sufficient to cover the country’s road maintenance backlog.

This came out at the key stakeholders meeting on road infrastructure sector where the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Development Dr Jorum Gumbo was addressing in Bindura.

"It is not a secret that most of our road network has outlived its useful lifespan and we would need to expend a minimum of approximately US$5 billion to rehabilitate the roads. The revenue that ZINARA is mobilising which is less than US$200 million per annum is not sufficient to cover the maintenance backlog," said Dr Gumbo.

Some of the major roads earmarked for rehabilitation in Mashonaland Central this year includes Mvurwi-Guruve-Angwa-Kanyemba Road, Mt Darwin-Mukumbura Road and Bindura Matepatepa Road.
