farming in zimbabwe.jpgThe inclusive government has been criticized for failing to put up support mechanisms for peri-urban agriculture despite the sector’s growing contribution to the country’s food production.

Economic Analyst, Mr Jonathan Kadzura says the inclusive government has failed millions of urban dwellers who have embarked in peri-urban agriculture by not providing support mechanisms in the form of funding and technical support.

Mr Kadzura said while no funding has come from the inclusive government with Finance Minister, Tendai Biti refusing to adequately fund agriculture, the Presidential Well-Wishers Inputs Support Scheme launched by Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, President Robert Mugabe, has seen peri-urban farmers receive inputs.

He said urban agriculture has become an important activity in many countries in the world.

Meanwhile, experts say if properly managed and supported, the sector can contribute significantly to the well-being of farmers and other citizens, and contribute immensely to national food production levels.
