Hundreds of people in the Midlands Province thronged Gweru Provincial Hospital for free cervical and breast cancer screening under a programme initiated by the First Lady Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa.

A bumper crowd was on ground to receive the First Lady who is initiating the programme to give assistance to vulnerable groups.

Minister of State for Midlands Province Cde Owen Ncube said there is need to increase health staff at hospitals to improve service delivery.

UNFPA representative Mrs Abigirl Musemburi commended the Amai Mnangagwa for making cervical and breast cancer screening accessible.

She said they will continue to provide technical support to hospitals.

Early detection is critical in the fight against cancer and the continued loss of life is unacceptable said a medical expert Dr Bernard  Madzima.

Ministry of Health and Child Care revealed that more than 2 270 cases of cancer are reported every year and 1 500 deaths are recorded annually
