basket ball 14-09-10.jpgA local organisation which empowers the youth through the sport of basketball, Hoops for Hope Zimbabwe, has been given an international Olympic award for inspiring young people.



The basketball institution received the award on a weekend it concluded the Inter suburb competitions which was won by Dzivarasekwa Raiders men and Glen Norah Pistons women.


After twelve years of groping for attention, Hoops for Hope Zimbabwe finally got due recognition with the international Olympic committee (IOC) awarding the organisation a trophy for working with and inspiring young people.


A jubilant Executive Director, Ngoni Munkukula, said, “Winning can only be achieved through extra hard work and an unwavering commitment to achieve success,” which is what has happened for them since 1998.


On the basketball court, Dzivaresekwa Raiders men and Glen Norah Pistons women emerged the Hoops for Hope basketball champions, winning the inter-suburb competitions at Prince Edward School in Harare.


Raiders easily overpowered Pioneer Blazers of Glen View 52-40 to win the final.


Raiders women however could not match the force of Glen Norah Pistons who beat the Dzivarasekwa ladies 42-32. 
Apart from playing basketball, the players also do Skills for Life Tutorials before engaging in any action.


The aim of the Hoops for Hope initiative is to motivate young adults to live a responsible life using basketball as a medium to reach the youths.
