honduras fire.jpgMore than 300 inmates were burnt and killed, others beyond recognition, when fire broke out at a jail in Comayagua about 100 kilometres north of the Honduran capital, Tegucigalpa.

Some of the inmates who managed to escape the blaze had severe burns and were taken to Tegucigalpa Hospital for treatment.

The fire which broke out late on Tuesday night is believed to have been started by one of the inmates by lighting a candle beside his bed.

Officials fear the death toll could rise to more than 350, as several others are still unaccounted for.

Meanwhile, Honduras President Porfirio Lobo has suspended some top officials at the prison while an investigation is being conducted.
