The Minister of Sport and Recreation, Makhosini Hlongwane has lamented the poor state of sporting facilities in Gweru describing the situation as tragic.

As part of the Ministry’s efforts to engage local authorities in the maintenance and rehabilitation of sport and recreation facilities, Minister Hlongwane met with Gweru City fathers and toured various sporting facilities around the City of Gweru where most of the facilities were dilapidated and in a state of neglect.

Other facilities had been turned into houses.

Speaking to ZBC News on the sidelines of his tour, Hlongwane said the state of sport and recreation facilities in Gweru is a tragic one.

Sporting administrators who were part of the Minister’s entourage implored the City of Gweru to rehabilitate sporting facilities which were now dilapidated due to lack of maintenance.

Besides his tour of sport and recreation facilities, Minister Hlongwane said the main purpose of his visit to Gweru was to lobby the council to include sport and recreation in their annual budgets as well as setting up of a fully fledged sport and recreation department within their structures that will take care of the sport and recreation infrastructure.
