The Harare City Council has with immediate effect suspended all trenching programmes by service providers in the capital until they restore the city’s infrastructure to its original state.
The council is up in arms with telecommunications service providers who are digging trenches in the central business district and around Harare, and abandoning the projects without repairing the affected areas.
Town Clerk, Dr Tendai Mahachi said though they entered into agreement with the service providers to rehabilitate roads after completion of the installation of the fibre optic, many are reneging on their promises hence the decision to suspend all operations.
It has also emerged during a recent full council meeting that some companies did not engage the council’s relevant departments before embarking on the trenching project.
Stakeholders have blasted the city for failing to follow worldwide trends in which trenching is no longer done as provision for future developments in the information communication technology sector.
They say the city will continue to be dug up until such a time the city fathers take urban planning seriously.
The trenching project involves laying an optic fibre underground, which would link all cities in Zimbabwe and the rest of the world.
