The Harare Challenge Cup got underway at Belgravia Sports Club this Saturday with some exciting rugby on the opening weekend.

Local rugby tourney produces excitement in opening weekend of the Harare Challenge cup with some intriguing battles featuring both veterans and youngsters.

In the men’s section the University of Zimbabwe got the better of Mbare 22-10.

It was a one-sided affair in the encounter which saw Old Hararians thumping Air Force 43-3.

In the most exciting of the encounters on Saturday a Harare Sports Club side largely made up of legends gave the younger generation a lesson on how a game can be won even in the absence of sheer pace.

Harare Sports Club legends overcame XP Horns 14-12 to begin their Harare Challenge Cup campaign on a high note.

Event organiser Shingirai Vere was satisfied with the level of play exhibited on the opening weekend.

“We are basically trying to give young talent an opportunity to shine. We have given sides in division two an opportunity to also compete so this in a way improves our level of rugby. To bring excitement we have shortened the games to 20 minutes a side,” said Vere.

The Harare Challenge cup seeks to give young players an opportunity to showcase their talent. The competition has also included women sides with Police Defenders getting the better of Old Hararians 33-15.
