Following typhoid outbreak in Mbare and Dzivarasekwa Extension recently, Harare City Council has called upon residents to drink water from safe sources and practice good personal hygiene as many are under threat from water-borne diseases this rainy season.

Residents of the area who spoke to the ZBC News called upon responsible authorities to address key drivers of water-borne diseases including access to clean and safe water.

City of Harare director for health Dr Prosper Chonzi said the issue of sanitation and access to safe water has to be addressed around the city and many suburbs are under threat from typhoid and cholera especially those near illegal settlements.

Dr Chonzi said 15 cases of typhoid were confirmed in Dzivarasekwa Extension and the situation is now under control.

In many cases issues of typhoid have been attributed to poor water sanitation and poor personal hygiene worsened by overpopulation.
