The City of Harare has expanded the scope of anti litter awareness by incorporating education on personal hygiene and cleanliness in light of the sporadic outbreaks of typhoid.

The comprehensive programme which has been expanded to apostolic sects is meant to instill the culture of environmental stewardship and general cleaning to avoid diseases.

City of Harare officials who visited the Johane Masowe Zambuko Church stressed the need for proper waste management practices.

Johane Masowe Zambuko Leader Madzibaba Steven Mugariri welcomed the initiative by the City of Harare saying the church plays an important role in transforming the mindset of the people with regards to littering.

Waste management in Zimbabwe requires a holistic approach which includes education and awareness, provision of adequate municipal refuse collection assets and separation at source.

Anti litter by-laws enforcement is also key in prompting behavioural change.

Other African cities like Kigali and Gaborone are considered clean because of the implementation of robust strategies.
