The City of Harare says it is in the process of acquiring 30 new compactors, a move expected to ease the collection of garbage in the capital.
City of Harare spokesperson Michael Chideme says with the current ageing fleet, the new compactors will assist in ensuring refuse collection is done on time.
He says the city has 47 compactors which are constantly breaking down.
Mr Chideme also added that they have introduced afternoon shifts so that refuse does not accumulate in both low density suburbs and the central business district.
Harare has been battling with the collection of refuse with residents complaining that the city has failed to execute its mandate to keep the capital clean leading to disease outbreaks such as typhoid and cholera.
