handwashing logo.jpgZimbabwe will join the rest of the world in commemorating Global Hand-washing Day on Friday, aimed at increasing awareness of the importance of hand-washing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases.

Health practitioners say washing hands can reduce the incidence of diarrhea rates among children under 5 by almost 50%, and respiratory infections by nearly 25%.

This year’s commemorations will be held at Budiriro 1 High School where community leaders and members, school children, members from ministries, the private sector, civil society and UN agencies will join hands in promoting hand washing with soap.

This year’s theme is more than just a day.

Global Hand-washing Day was initiated in 2008 by the global public-private partnership for hand-washing with soap.
