Residents of Mtapa in Gweru have expressed annoyance at police over its delays in removing a decomposing body of a woman that spent days floating in the Gweru river.

Police said they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of the woman.

Scores of Mtapa residents swamped the banks of Gweru river to catch a glimpse of the decomposing body of an unidentified woman.

The residents expressed dismay at police for taking days to retrieve the body which was discovered on Sunday morning.

Confronted for answers over their delayed reaction to attend the matter, Midlands acting police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende said they were waiting for forensic experts and the sub Aqua unit to assist in its extraction.

She however revealed they have since engaged the services of experts to establish the circumstances surrounding the death of the woman.

Police are appealing to members of the public who are missing a female relative to come forward and identify the body which is being kept at Gweru Provincial Hospital mortuary.
