Gwanda town council has committed US$200 000 towards the construction of a new school at Garikai /Hlalani Kuhle residential suburb, a development that is expected to ease congestion at existing schools.
Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony held today, Gwanda town Mayor Councillor Knowledge Ndlovu said the school which is expected to be complete by year end will also cater for residents of the new Bloemfontein suburb.
Ward 8 Councillor, Cde Wilson Dube appealed to well wishers and the Zimbabwe Defence Forces to assist in the speedy construction of the facility as existing schools have failed to absorb all children.
There are currently five primary schools and two secondary schools in Gwanda town.
City fathers said the teacher-pupil ratio which stands at one teacher for every 55 students is a contributing factor to the poor pass rate at some schools.
