Government is set to stimulate stakeholder participation during the launch of the international year of sustainable tourism development by rolling out various activities that promote the sector.

The international year of sustainable tourism development will see government focusing on five areas such as inclusive and sustainable economic growth, social inclusiveness, employment and poverty reduction among others.

Briefing journalists in the capital, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister, Dr Walter Mzembi said the sector plays an important role in economic development creating over 300 million jobs the world over.

“The commemorations will foster change in policies, business practices and consumer behaviour towards a more sustainable approach that can contribute effectively to the achievement of sustainable development goals,” said Dr Mzembi.

During the course of the year a number of initiatives will be carried out with the carnival set for September this year, community based tourism, green tourism initiative and township tourism among others.
