Government through the social welfare department is offering protection services to survivors of human trafficking by assisting them with places of safety and counseling.

The Rehabilitation Residential Centre situated at the Harare Hospital provides victims with a safe and secure environment.

The facility also offers counseling and psycho-social support by professional social welfare officers for those with post- traumatic stress disorder.

This was revealed by Mr Simon Masanga the principal director in the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare during the belated commemorations of the Trafficking in Persons Awareness Campaign in Bulawayo.

The other responsibilities of the ministry include prevention of trafficking, prosecution of offenders together with the mobilisation of resources to manage the situation.

As a result 130 Zimbabwean women who fell victim to human trafficking in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia were successfully repatriated, while another group of five among them two women and three children suspected to have been human trafficking victims in Sudan were also brought back home.

The women are said to have been treated as slaves and subjected to harsh working environment and suffered emotional and physical abuse.
