The Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and Cooperative Development in partnership with development partners has moved in to capacitate associations by providing training workshops to leaders of the organisations in a bid to promote corporate governance.

The government is making strides in dealing with issues to do with embezzlement of funds and promote good leadership qualities among cooperatives after most of these leaders have been found on the wrong side of the law.

Registrar of Cooperatives in the SMEs ministry, Mr Thabani Shoko said it has come to government’s attention that most of such organisations’ books are in shambles creating room for misappropriation of funds, hence the move to train such leaders.

Some of the leaders of the cooperatives who are attending the week long training said the workshop has provided them with some insights on issues of proper leadership skills which will be essential to their constituencies.

The workshop drew participants from the country’s 10 provinces and is being facilitated by experts from the United Nations Development Programme.
