Government is seized with a housing backlog of about 1.25 million housing units and the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing is now encouraging people to save towards the construction of their own houses and reduce the burden on the fiscus.

The Ministry of Local Government, Public works and National Housing introduced the home ownership scheme where prospective first time home owners will pool resources towards the servicing of their own stands.

Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Cde Savior Kasukuwere who visited some of the suburbs whose old structures will be demolished to pave way for modern and better ones said tenants should start to embrace home ownership schemes.

Highfield residents welcomed the move by government considering most of them are seating on eviction notices.

Some of the suburbs visited for assessment by the minister and his entourage include Dzivarasekwa Extension, Highfields and Glen Norah.
