The government has secured funding for the winter wheat farming and will provide irrigation equipment to assist farmers who are keen to contribute to the attainment of national wheat requirements this season.
Vice President Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa said government is optimistic of realising 400 000 metric tonnes of wheat this year as adequate funding has been secured for the winter wheat production.
He said the government will provide irrigation equipment and inputs to farmers who have access to water to scale up wheat production revealing five companies have come on board to bankroll the winter wheat command agriculture programme nationally.
“The programme will also spread to other crops such as soya bean in the next farming season,” says Vice President Mnangagwa.
Cde Mnangagwa said the government has reached an agreement with grain millers for the provision of US$8 million for the establishment of more silos.
The production of winter wheat has over the years been on a decline owing to the many challenges and the government initiative is expected to breathe new life into the sector.
