The government has ordered all illegal settlers to immediately vacate farmland they are occupying.

The new Minister of Lands, Agriculture and Rural Resettlement, Air Marshall Perrance Shiri read the riot act to illegal settlers and corrupt ministry officials.

Addressing ministers of state for provincial affairs in a meeting to find a common ground on land issues, Minister Shiri said in the short time he has been minister, he received hundreds of cases pertaining to land disputes and the Land Commission must resolve these issues speedily.

“To minimise land disputes, the Surveyor General shall work round the clock so that resettled land is fully surveyed and boundaries properly demarcated. Only those people with proper documentation of land occupancy and/or those allocated land legitimately should remain on the farms and concentrate on production unhindered,” said Air Marshall Shiri.

He also directed that all leases for agricultural land shall be for a period of 99 years to instil confidence, adding that farmers whose land had been surveyed should collect their leases.

In his inauguration speech, President Emmerson Mnangagwa charged the agriculture sector with the responsibility to be the engine for socio-economic growth.
