Government says it has begun implementation of recommendations of the inter-ministerial committee on pricing following the approval of measures by cabinet and has prioritised engagement with producers in order to address the unwarranted price hikes.
The Ministry of Industry and Commerce which was mandated to chair the inter-ministerial committee tasked to look into the pricing issues and availability of goods said a cocktail of measures proposed by the committee have been adopted by cabinet.
Industry and Commerce Minister, Dr Mike Bimha said part of the measures being implemented to address the price hikes include strengthening engagement with the local producers, continuously monitoring and capacitation of the Consumer Council of Zimbabwe.
According to Dr Bimha, government has also broadened the mandate of the Competition and Tariffs Commission to ensure that they investigate all the collusive tendencies by the local producers.
Government has attributed the increase in prices and panic buying experienced on the 22ndand 23rd of September to the unsubstantiated negative reports on social media.
