The government has expressed satisfaction over this year’s independence preparations which saw members of the security forces conducting their final rehearsals at the National Sports Stadium in Harare this Thursday.

Members of the security forces comprising the Zimbabwe National Army, Air Force of Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) and the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services converged at the giant National Sports Stadium where they held final inspection rehearsals ahead of the independence day set for Tuesday, 18 April.

The rehearsals were characterised by marches by security forces, a fly past by the Air Force of Zimbabwe and the traditional Independence Flame lighting.

Briefing the media, the Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Cde Saviour Kasukuwere said preparations are well on course and called on all progressive people to throng the National Sports Stadium for big day.

Cde Kasukuwere cited the land reform programme which eventually ushered in the successful command agriculture programme and Zimbabwe’s high literacy rate, among others, as lifetime achievements to celebrate as the country marks 37 years of independence under the principled leadership of President Robert Mugabe.

The Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, Dr Christopher Mushohwe implored the media to reflect on the 37 years of self rule and demonstrate to the world that Zimbabwe is a peaceful and democratic nation.

This year’s independence celebrations will be held under the theme: ‘Zimbabwe @37: Embracing Easy of Doing Business for Socio-Economic Development.
