The government has commended rural districts councils which have been able to venture into major capital projects at a time when urban local authorities have failed to improve service delivery.
Local Government, Rural and Urban Development Minister, Dr Ignatius Chombo (pictured) says the leadership of the five rural district councils that has performed well during the first half of the year demonstrated good corporate governance and accountability which is lacking in most urban councils.
He noted that the councils were able to buy road construction and maintenance equipment using their internal funds, a clear demonstration that ratepayers’ money is being used in a transparent manner.
The five rural district councils are Goromonzi, Chipinge, Mbire, Runde and Zvimba.
Most MDC-T led urban local authorities have been accused of failing to prioritise service delivery and instead are channeling the huge chunk of their budgets to salaries and allowances.
