The Minister of Sport and Recreation, Cde Makhosini Hlongwane has started engaging 32 urban local authorities lobbying them to provide space for sport and recreation facilities within the community housing development plan.
Minister Hlongwane met various representatives of local authorities, sport associations and government officials in Mutare, engaging all the 32 urban local authorities with a view to revive sport development and increase investment in sport and recreation facilities.
The Minister expressed concern over the state of the sport and recreation infrastructure in most urban local authorities, amid indications that some local authorities have converted the once sport and recreation areas into housing stands.
The Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs, Cde Mandi Chimene said revival of sport and recreation facilities will help to tap the sleeping sporting talent which has not been fully developed.
Mutare Town Clerk, Mr Joshua Maligwa said the local authority is in full support of the government initiative, adding that a wellness policy is now at an advanced stage of development.
Minister Hlongwane and his delegation toured several sport and recreation facilities, the main bath in Mutare, Chikanga Sport Complex and Mutare Sports Club to get a better appreciation of the state of sport and recreation infrastructure.
