More than 70 families from ward 27 in Chiredzi West Constituency, who were affected by a hailstorm which destroyed their homesteads in January this year, have received assistance from the government.
The affected families received food assistance and clothing sourced by the government through the Department of Social Welfare.
Addressing the families during the handover of the goods, Chiredzi District Assistant Administrator, Ms Memory Dhliwayo and area legislator, Cde Farai Msikavanhu said while the government remains committed to assist people in cases of disaster, it is also important to come up with proper models of houses for the resettled communities that can withstand the harsh and unpredictable new weather partners.
The affected families thanked government for the intervention expressing they are yet to recover from the effects of the destruction.
Though no deaths were recorded, property worth thousands of dollars was destroyed by hailstorm in January.
The 2018/19 rainy season has been affected by the El Nino phenomenon, which according to experts causes unpredictable rainfall patterns characterised by floods, hailstorm and violent lightning, among other dangers and a number of areas have been affected countrywide.
