Government has approved the policy framework for infrastructure provision for the micro, small and medium enterprises sector.
The policy crafted by the Small and Medium Enterprises and Co-operative Development Ministry is aimed at strengthening the collaboration of government ministries, local authorities and other development partners in the provision of affordable and appropriate infrastructure for SMEs.
Small and Medium Enterprises and Co-operative Development Minister, Cde Sithembiso Nyoni said her Ministry is now going to co-ordinate all activities to enhance the development of the sector as well as formalising its activities.
The policy will also be complimented by the SMEs Amendment Bill, which is now being tabled before the Senate and the recently launched Medium Term Plan (MTP), which all seek to enhance the contribution of SMEs to the economy.
SMEs, which are mostly informal, constitute an estimated 50% of economic activity in the country and have been facing challenges such as high rentals and lack of sanitary facilities on their premises.
Some SMEs have also shunned designated working areas, saying they are not strategically located to attract business.
