The driver of a goods train and two motorists escaped with minor injuries on Sunday night when the train derailed in Glendale.
Death was averted on Sunday night when a goods train failed to climb up a steep gradient in Concession and rolled backwards until it rammed into a passenger vehicle and derailed.
The train was transporting nickel from Trojan Mine to South Africa via Harare.
Witnesses said the train was overpowered by its heavy load which pulled it backwards until it collided with a passenger vehicle which went on to ram into another vehicle close by.
Mashonaland Central Acting Provincial Police Spokesperson Assistant Inspector Petros Masikati confirmed the incident, highlighting the motorists suffered minored injuries but their vehicles a Toyota Wish and a Toyota Camry were extensively damaged.
Assistant Inspector Masikati urged motorists to reduce speed and exercise extreme caution when approaching level crossings regardless of the low volumes of rail traffic.
