The body of the late Gogo Maria Msika is now back in Harare after it laid in state at the Msika home in Matsheamhlope, Bulawayo last night.
Aboard an Air Force of Zimbabwe aircraft, the body was accompanied by the sister of the late Gogo Msika and several relatives as well as the sister of the late Vice President Joseph Msika, Mrs Veronica Mwela, who recalled the immense role played by the late national heroine in advising her husband, taking care of the family during the liberation struggle and organising other women in the Zanu PF Women’s League.
Ministers; Simon Khaya Moyo and Tshinga Dube said late Gogo Msika together with other early women nationalists like Cde Jane Ngwenya and Cde Sally Mugabe worked tirelessly to organise women.
From the airport, the body was taken to One Commando Barracks, afterwhich it passed through the St Marys Anglican Church in Highlands for a church service.
Earlier, the Bulawayo community gave a befitting send off to Gogo Msika at Anglican church where a memorial service was held before the body left for Harare.
‘A humble entrepreneur, a farmer, a teacher and above all a caring mother,’ are some of the superlatives that the Bulawayo community used to describe Gogo Msika.
Family members said in the late national heroine, they have lost a mother who was now providing wisdom on how families can be sustained.
According to the Zanu PF Bulawayo leadership, the late Vice President Msika could not have managed to execute some of the works he did before and after independence without the exploits and support of his wife.
Before leaving for Bulawayo yesterday, Gogo Msika’s body was taken to Chiweshe, the rural home of the Msika family.
Gogo Msika will be buried at the National Heroes Acre in Harare tomorrow.
