The Vice President and Second Secretary of Zanu PF Retired General Constantino Chiwenga revealed that the late national hero Cde Josiah Magama Tongogara knew he was never going to see a free Zimbabwe.

Cde Chiwenga said this at the memorial service to mark the 38th anniversary of the death of one of the country’s most decorated freedom fighters, popularly known as General Tongo at the National Heroes Acre in Harare today.

The arrival of Retired General Chiwenga saw a heavy down pour at the National Shrine signifying the blessings of the ancestors for the proceedings.

Despite the rains, all dignitaries including members of the Tongogara Trustee sacrificed their comfort and left the rains to purify them.  

The Zanu PF Second Secretary who was also seriously shot during the same period that General Tongo was killed said he spent a week in comma adding a lot of unexplained strange things happened.

Cde Chiwenga called on Zimbabweans to unite for a common goal to develop the nation.

The wife of the national hero Cde Angeline Tongogara said she is happy with the new political dispensation which she said recognises the sacrifice made by her husband General Tongo.

Other speakers praised the late national leader for his visionary leadership that saw the country attaining independence.

General Tongo died in Mozambique on the 26th of December 1979 few days after cease fire.

Despite him playing a significant role in the liberation struggle, he has never tested a free Zimbabwe and it was his will to see a free Zimbabwe.

He is on record saying he was not concerned about power but just to liberate the country.
