chihuri augustine.jpgPresidential spokesperson George Charamba says the term of office of the Police Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri has been extended to 2014.

Cde Charamba, who is also the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Media, Information and Publicity, said the reappointment of the Commissioner-General is in full compliance with the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

He said the constitution stipulates that the Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, President Robert Mugabe, consults the relevant commission when appointing or re-appointing any of the service chiefs.

Cde Charamba said in reappointing Commissioner-General Chihuri, the President was in full consultation with the Police Service Commission.

He revealed that the terms of office of the Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army, Lieutenant General Philip Valerio Sibanda,  Airforce of Zimbabwe Commander, Air Marshal Perence Shiri as well as the Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, General Constantine Chiwenga have also been extended.

Cde Charamba also clarified that Brigadier-General Douglas Nyikayaramba’s promotion to the rank of Major General is based on seniority and merit and can not be challenged.
