solomon mujuru1 16.08.11.jpgThe late Retired General Solomon Tapfumaneyi Mujuru has been a hailed as a keen sportsman and great supporter and patron of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces team and Black Rhinos Football Club.

Former Black Rhinos players and officials say Cde Mujuru was a father-figure, leader, commander and a founder of the club.

Black Rhinos Football Club was formed in 1983 with the late General Mujuru playing a major role.

The team attracted top players from CAPS United and Dynamos and went on to win the league in 1984 and the then prestigious Castle Cup to clinch a double.

The team then won right to compete in the CAF Champions League and CAF Cup Winners Cup.

Some of the players were selected into the Defence Forces team which was a combination of the army team Black Rhinos, Air Force teams Chapungu and Blue Swallows.

The team went on to compete with the world’s best in Italy during the World Military Games.

Former Zimbabwe and Black Rhinos star players midfielder Stanford “Stix” Mtizwa and striker Jimmy Mbewe said the death of General Mujuru has robbed them of a father and leader.

Black Rhinos football club is now playing in the Northern Region First Division following their relegation from the top-flight Premier Soccer League.
